I just finished the NAMM Z3 prototype body. It will go into sanding and prep tomorrow. Trying to decide on the color now. The front runners are a really vibrant greenburst or blueburst. Feel free to cast your vote. All the best in the new year. Sheldon

I'm very blessed that my lady understands, supports, and even encourages my DAS, and all things Dingwall :D She told me the other day she checked into airline tickets to Saskatoon as a possible side trip for our vacation this summer. How cool is that?! Mark[/quote:zrwsjeeg] LUCKY!!! Wait.... are you sure it's not a trick??? Maybe she just wants to get her hands on Sheldon.... his neck perhaps???[/quote:zrwsjeeg] Could be. I haven't considered that. The Z3 is my birthday present, so I suspect her motives are genuine. However...I would hate to put Dr. Wood in any danger and ruin my chances for future Dingwalls. Mark

The Z3 at NAMM has a Ziracote fretboard. The light color in the board is sapwood. I'm going with the Ziracote with sapwood on my new Z3 as I really like the looks of it. You will have to ask Dingwall Sales or Sheldon if there is a choice on fretboard woods on the Z3? I do know they have reduced the options available to try and speed up production.

Hey Sheldon, is the fretboard a marbled (if that term is correct) Pau Ferro, or is it a rare piece of Wenge or something? It has an interesting look. I don't know if I like that look or not, yet. But, who cares right? It's a freakin' Z3.... we're all GASing for one!!! :D

Yes, I can only speak for myself, but Sheldon is keeping me satisfied (sonically)...and broke...wait, that's me keeping me broke, not his fault that he makes basses that I MUST have

Hey people, you are only making it more painful for me that I am waiting for my Z3 in few months. But then again I do not exist, so I feel no pain  I know that Sheldon is trying his best to keep us all satisfied

OK, enough already, I never thought I would be replacing my beloved AB1, but the amazing Z3 has finally done it, I will be ordering one. Sheldon, have you figured out colour and wood options yet? Is there a spec and options sheet available or is this an 'on the phone or e-mail job?' Nic[/quote:16885lp8] Ahh, Nic takes the plunge. You know, the options available are many. There are a bunch of colors to choose from, and I'm sure Sheldon will even do a custom color of your choice. I would email the shop or Dingwall Sales for a current price list. It will list all the colors and woods available for the Z. I'm pretty sure the sky is the limit on the high-end Dingwalls. Recall the Snotburst Z? Remember- if you live near a Dingwall retailer, you will have to order from them. Happy Z planning, Nic! :) So, are you selling the AB now? Mark[/quote:16885lp8] Hi Mark, and the others who spoke up afterwards. Yes, my AB1 will be up for sale but not until I have the Z3 in my sticky mitts! (I cant imagine not having a DW around to play whenever I need to feed my addiction). I want the Z3 to be the same colour as my AB1(indigoburst), and as was mentioned in the threads, because these basses feel and play so good all the fancy dancy stuff is nice to have but doesnt really get you any further down the road to nirvana so I dont mind if options are limited. My AB1 has a flame maple top which looks great and the indigoburst can look anywhere from deep blue to dark purple depending on the lighting (much to the amusement of my band mates who jokingly say the colour change is a mood indicator!!!). So, an indigoburst Z3, with a flame maple top, wenge fretboard, pearl side dots and the "flying D" marker on the 12 fret, OBP3, and a great big grin on my face.......yup thats about the size of it! N

DAMNIT!! Why did I read this!! I'm still in a state of sonic bliss from getting not just my first Dingwall, but also a second.... in the last 5 months : my AB 5 and 6 strings. Now, I'm DASing for a Z3. :x I'm running out of equipment and basses that I can liquidate! Sheldon, I'll be ordering one soon :x :D :x :D

There are very few options on Z basses now. Sheldon is trying hard to get his backlog caught up by years end of Z basses? Color and top selection may be all you get at this point. You may have to move up to a Prima Artist to get all the different choices. Shoot Dingwall Sales an email but I think this is what you will find. They would not do a custom inlay for me, but when you get a bass that plays and sounds as good as a Dingwall does it really matter?
Wow - Sheldon keeps pushing the envelope![/quote:2x3v1arw] I got a chance to do a thorough test drive of the Z3 last Friday thanks to the generosity of TwoPort. Here is some of what I learned and some impressions: The new Fatty pickups seem very well balanced and have a nice bump in the mids. This gives the attack that little extra "burp" as Sheldon aptly describes it. I played along with some of our band's tunes through headphones and had no trouble with the pups cutting through the mix while not a bit of harshness was detected. Both the lows and highs were clear and I got the mid growl that I like as well. The 3 pickup configuration allows for really nice tonal combinations, too. It was nice to essentially be playing a Z1 one instant and, with the twist of a knob, in the next be playing a Z2. The bridge pup is in roughly the same position as the bridge pup on the ABs (generalizing from my rudimentary measurements on my ABII) while the neck pup on the Z3 is positioned forward of the ABs' in the same harmonic region that the neck pup of a Jazz bass is positioned. The middle pup's position just in front of the bridge pup gives the mids some extra depth and punch. From there, it just gets better. Perhaps the ultimate beauty/genius of the new Dingwall designs is the built-in flexibility in tone shaping offered by the individually selectable internal pickup wiring. Like their DW predecessors, the new Fatty pups for the Z3 are split coil, which means that, with their additional internal wiring and additional external switching, the pickups can be internally linked in series or in parallel with the flip of a switch. (The new Z1s, Z2s and PAs will have the same switchable internal linking options built into their pickups, too.) In it's current configuration, the Z3 offers the following options. (PU Selection on Selector Knob - Internal Pickup Wiring Options) Solo Bridge - internal series linking, only. Bridge/Middle in Series with each other - bridge pup in series, middle pup in series or parallel. Bridge/Neck in Parallel with each other - bridge pup in series, neck pup in series or parallel. Solo Neck - internal series or parallel linking. Unless I forgot something, there are 7 possible tonal combinations achievable organically, that is to say, without ever turning on the pre amp. Two new favorite settings I discovered are 1) the Z2 setting (pups in series) with the bridge pup internally linked in series (like a Mach II) and the middle pickup internally linked in parallel and 2) the neck pup soloed and internally linked in series. There is much more to explore and I look forward to the day my Z3 arrives. Thanks again to TwoPort for helping me decide which DW to choose (this time around :D ) and to Sheldon for making such a fine instrument. I guess I better change my signature one of these days. John

They say if you don't ask the question you won't get the answer, so here it is. The two sounds youwere getting Jazz as in Fender Jazz? and Musicman, what is that? I have a Z3 on order and I'm just wondering what to expect. I currently have a Prima Artist that sounds wonderful. How will the Z3 compare tone wise. I did get a chance to hold and play the one at NAMM, is that yours Twoport? however it was very noisey and I only had a few minutes so I really can't comment except for the playability and comfort. The neck is basically the same as my Prima. Best 5 string I have ever played. Your comments are great and if you can add a few I would appreciate it Twoport. Thank you.

Hey TwoPort, Glad to hear your comments on the Z3 and SJ5 and that they are working for you. These were the tones we were aiming for, but having it confirmed by someone with ears as refined as yours means a lot.
Well first of all I have to say that the playability of this bass is beyond belief. Many of you know that a custom bass by Sheldon is absolute top end so far as feel feel goes. From top to bottom the feel is amazingly consistent unlike most bases where you really feel like you're playing 3 basses - one at the bottom, one in the middle, and one at the top cause the string height or something is so different. And then tone - great midrange bite! I'm really focusing on my two favorite sounds - jazz and musicman.00 ...If I could have any sound I wanted - this would be it!! Wow - Sheldon keeps pushing the envelope![/quote:19appyfd] You know, I have three amazing Dingwalls. You would think that would make things easier, but the wait for my Z3 is downright painful! Please come soon! :D Mark
