At the last Phil Collins-Tour I saw the great Bassplayer Leland Sklar playing a Bass I`ve never seen before. With the help of a German Bassplayer-Magazin (Bassprofessor) I found out that this very interesting looking Bass was a DINGWALL. I contacted Dingwall and got all the information I need (Thanks to Sheldon and Dingwall Sales!!). Then I found a 10 years old Prima 5, and after a few
sleepless nights (because of the fannned frets....) I decided: This is my next Bass! Now, six month later I`m still very happy with the Prima, the fanned frets have never been a problem for me. Sheldon recommend me to upgrade the Bass with the OBP-3 Preamp, Dingwall FD-3 Pickups and Dingwall-Saddles. This is my next project, the parts are already ordered! When the project is finished I will post my experiences here.

Have a nice groove!!!!

This looks like an all-walnut body core. Is this before the dual-density body core was implemented?

You are right, this is an all-walnut body. I had never a chance to play a Dingwall with a dual-wood body, so I don`t know anything about the sound-differences.

I don't remember when we made the switch to Walnut, but judging by the photo, that's a mahogany core.

Good to know, what was the reason for the switch from Mahagony to Walnut? Can you describe the sound differences?

The reason for the switch was because we couldn't get a consistent supply of Mahogany. It would range from dark, heavy and bright sounding to light in weight and color and warm sounding.

Walnut sounds very similar to good mahogany. A good mahogany is more resonant, where walnut is more clear and defined.

Here's my newest baby.
Check out how the colour looks different depending on the light. One's with a flash and the other is without.

It plays and sounds great as expected. The neck is slightly thinner than my ABII, but overall everything is top notch.

Here is my well gigged AB1 5...the story...., I knew there must be something better than the ordinary basses I had played so I walked into Axe music one day and laid down the challenge to Moreno, in half an hour I walked out with the AB1-5 for a weekend trial! I practiced with it for 2 hours then played 2 gigs, on monday I phoned Moreno and told him he couldn't have his Bass back, he said that was fine but that he would have to make a slight adjustment to my credit card balance....please note; this bass will NEVER be for sale :D

Nic-
great closeups.....
Don't say never....I think you will find that many (if not most of us) get our hands on the Dingwall AB I basses first, then wonder--gee if the ABs sound amazing, what does a Z1/Z2/ prima sound like...then your hooked. That upgrade to a Z1/Z2/prima may have your tongue wagging and your ABI out on Ebay to pay for the Prima...but your right. These basses are amzing

May i ask- do you find that Samson wireless system to compress your tone and do you loose low end? IIRC that system didn't go down as low as the Low B fundemental, just curious if you notice a difference.

Nic, that's a beautiful bass. I have a Fender Jazz in that color, and also my Nissan Maxima is that color!

Frank, you're right. When I got my AB1 someone warned me that it was a 'gateway' Dingwall...that it was great, but it would make me want another.

...Less than a year later, I have another on the way!

Luckily, I'm pretty sure I've got it covered so that I don't have to sell my AB1 either. Even so, I have a few other basses that would be up on the block before I got there!

Nice bass, Nic.

A year after I got my Voodoo, I started to wonder about the AB. I'm not thrilled about taking the Voodoo to every gig, so I e-mailed Sheldon to ask him if he thought a player who started on one of his high-end basses would be happy with an AB. I never heard back on that e-mail (but I have on countless others). Maybe it's a dumb question. At any rate, the praise that the ABs have received in this forum prompted me to take the plunge, and I am eagerly awaiting delivery of my AB1 in February.

Dingwall-addiction syndrome (DAS) can be acquired as Frank described, but it also works the other way... I'm already planning my third Dingwall, an AB1 fretless, and I have yet to take delivery of my second one. Sadly, there is no known cure for this illness. Hmmm...you know, I've always wanted a 3 string bass...
