So, I've just bought my 2nd Dingwall, an older AB 6 string (the one Danksalot listed on Talkbass). It's only been 5 months or so since I bought my AB-I 5 string. I've caught DAS.... bad!!

QUESTIONS:
1) Are the electronics the same for ABs & AB-Is, w/ the push/pull tone doing the same function as the switch on AB-Is?
2) If so, which is on, push or pull?
3) The neck on the AB 6er seems very wide, has this changed over the years?
4) And, why is there no side dot for the 19th fret?

Thanks, JJ

Hi,

Perhaps I can contribute to questions 1 and 2.
I guess with AB you mean the older AB's like mine, which have a push/pull knob.

The BluEQube when 'on' has less high end and mid. As a passive control, it can only attenuate, not boost. When the switch is down, it's off, and then you're getting more mids and highs in your signal.

Have fun playing!

Marton (really close to a 5-stringer!)

Hi JJ

I have an AB1 5 with the Blucube push pull on the volume knob. The Blucube is engaged when the knob is pulled up, it us a preshape filter which cuts mids at 380Hz, it tames those barking FD1's and lends a more modern tone, it works well for slapping with PU's in parallel, or on bridge PU, and gives a nice warmth to the PU's in series.
I have never noticed if my AB1 has a marker dot on the 19th, I will take a look tonight, what is the serial number of your AB6?

Hey guys, thanks. Serial is 3498, and the wrench ziplock has a date of Nov '03 wrote on it. Unfotunately, there is no other papers or control instructions. The neck is one piece maple, where as my 5 has a multiple pieces. And, the body appears to be solid flame maple, where as my 5 looks like ash w/ flame maple top.

I thought that ABs were still in production and had the 1 piece neck and all maple body, w/ the push/pull tone knob (my 6 string). And that AB-Is had the multi-lam neck, ash/flame maple top bodies, and the flip-switch. And, of course the AB-IIs have the exotic woods. I've gathered all this from reading the forums, product descriptions, and photo galleries. But, now I'm confused as to what an AB is, an older AB-I or a separate product line altogether??? I know that there was a supposedly new AB on ebay yesterday (no flip-switch), listed as an AB.

The Afterburner didn't become the Afterburner I until the ABII came along. So AB and ABI are used interchangeably.

The missing 19th fret side dot somehow slipped by 4 or 5 sets of eyes - including mine  The original owner asked about this when he first bought it.

I guess you can either look at it as having a funky one of a kind, or I can send you some dot material and you can have a tech install the dot for you.

Thanks Sheldon. I wasn't gonna bug you personally with my questions, you have enough on your plate. But, you've cleared it all up for me. And, I can't tell you how happy I am to have a fluke!!! That is so cool!! :D Hey, I bet even Fullrangebass doesn't have a fluke-Dingwall, although he DOES have many one-of-a-kinds, I'm sure! Thanks, JJ
