Early versions of the new-style knobs were prone to cracking. Sheldon changed the material that he used to make the knobs, to address this issue. I'm sure he'll hook you up with a new knob or set when he checks in.

To answer your questions: 1. I don't know if the knobs are new style or old style... how can one tell? What's the difference? (Are new ones better?) They're a soft-ish black material and look like President Lincolns stovepipe hat. They're .75" in diameter and .75" tall. They have regularly spaced indentations around the circumference extending up the side. BTW, someone at Bass Central (Mike) has been very quick with responding to my email and saying he'll mail me a knob pronto. 2. Yes... my screen name comes from my ride - a 1998 Valkyrie Tourer... great bike but I have no time to ride it. It's for sale on Craig's list. Welcome to the club Burt! If your bass is new and under warranty, I am sure Sheldon would send you a new knob when he gets back. He might even if its not technically under warranty. He is usually good about taking care of his basses even if you are not the original owner. One of the perks of being a Dingwall owner. Zac

Check the "amp and cab" thread for recommendations. Although we're unanimous in our affection for DW basses, our rig preferences vary widely. You'll find a way to rationalize just about any GAS symptom! (my .02 is that Phil Jones cabs provide the ultimate fidelity, although not at the cheapest price or lowest weight).

Thank you Frank, Ken for "welcoming me into the brotherhood". It's been awhile since I woke up in the morning and immediately wanted to play. Fortunately, my band has a gig tonight in a local bar. I think I might bring both axes (AFI and Jazz Bass) in case I feel a bit insecure about playing only the new one. It is my first 5 string... so I need to get used to this. Interestingly, the fanned fretting doesn't seem to be much of an adjustment. Obviously, the spacing between the lower frets on the B and E strings is the biggest adjustment - e.g. between the nut and first fret is a bit longer on all strings compared to my Jazz Bass. BTW, is the nut technically a zero fret ala Buzz Feitan? I don't know much about this tuning system. Ken... yes, I had an opportunity (my one and only) to play an Afterburner I last August in Seattle at Bass Northwest. I also auditioned a Warwick Corvette double buck (way to heavy for my old bones) and a couple more. I kept returning to the Afterburner (which sounded very sweet throuh their Ashdown amp). Eventually, I simply couldn't put it down! Believe me when I say it took every ounce of "practicality" not to walk out of the shop with this instrument. I've been "doing research" via reading reviews, visiting local shops, etc in order to discover "if there's any other bass out there that's calling to me" the way the Afterburner did after that one audition. I didn't find one and finally narrowed down my buying decision to either an Afterburner I or wait for the SJ5 to hit the streets. This choice was based pretty much on informed advice I'd gotten from Dingwall Sales and some other sales people in various shops about what would fit my need for my current gig: blues/rock/r&b. I promise I'll post a photo asap. One more subject I'd be interested in hearing about in this forum: Are any of you experiencing a "cosmic synergy" between your ABI and any particular amplifier/cabinet? I've been using (as I mentioned in my previous post) a Mesa Boogie Walkabout combo. This has 300 watts of tube/mosfet hybrid power into one 15" speaker. It has a very effective passive radiator on the underside of the cab which really adds suprisingly deep "thunderous" bottom for such a small cabinet. Actually, after playing my new ABI through it - it sounds like a very different amp - the harmonic structure of the notes is much more audible, it's punchier - just a much richer, more interesting tonal spectrum (to my ear). So, maybe I'll just keep it. Thanks for the welcome! Burt

Hey- Congrats on your new bass. Glad you like it. Did you find the fanned frets were no problem? Actually 'round here new basses don't exist until you post a pict of you w/ a huge smile on your face and your new bass. Then we believe you. Just a heads up, Dingwall AB basses are like Dingwall crack, you'll get hooked, sell off all your parallel fretted basses, and try to figure to how to get more Dingwalls. These basses are just that amazing for the price. Someone made a comment awhile back, that after playing a Dingwall bass most other basses seem primative in comparision. I have to agree. Welcome to the club I'd send a quick email to sheldon, he'll make the recommendations to correct your problem, just be aware that he is on vacation next week
