Listed as "Afterburner II 5 String Fretless": [url:x2jr7phs]http://cgi.ebay.com/Dingwall-Afterburner-II-5-String-Fretless-Bass-AB_W0QQitemZ290243058310QQihZ019QQcategoryZ4713QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem[/url:x2jr7phs] Obviously, it's a 6... fairly obviously an AB I, though perhaps one of Jong's AB 1.5s (based on knobs and switches)? Mmmm... fretless. If it [i:x2jr7phs]were[/i:x2jr7phs] a 5... adam

This is the same bass, I'm pretty sure. I saved this in my Dingwall pix folder in October 2005, so it's not that recent an AB. Jong's and Ed Roman's special ABs happened in '07. This one is a mystery. I have admired and wondered about it for quite some time. If it was a 5, I'd take it today. Maybe Sheldon will clear it up for us. Either that, or Fullrange will fill us in on all the details after he lands it, most likely after he shows us his "new" PA6 from Europe :P Mark

Doesn't the dual toggle swithes indicate an active preamp? My ABII had the two switches and my ABI has a single switch. I also thought that the picture of the back of the body showed a battery access cover. Did I see that incorectly? Buy the way, the finish looks a lot like the one on my ABI - I like it. If it were a 5'er I would be thinking about it also.....GASing!

I have an AB1 (#3543) with an OBPT1 upgrade. Is that the 1.5 everyone here is talking about?

Sheldon does an excellent job with fretless fanned frets. You won't be disappointed.

No.... I got it from New Jersey Guitar and Bass Center about 2 or 3 years ago. It's a honey amberburst AB1-5. Best 5 string I ever owned!! BTW the people and service at the New Jersey Guitar and Bass Center are fantastic to deal with!

Whalepool is supposedly limited to BC.

So, summing things up, i think we've got: ABI with a whalepool blue quilt top, active pre (presumably the OBP-1). Going by the serial number, pretty sure it will have FD-3 pups. It's got the older knobs, which makes sense for the vintage. I'm guessing it was built in 2003 or 2004.

looks longingly at the 6-string, fretless, whalepool blue... anyone know what the black metal insert in the back of the headstock is for? how would this sound, compared to my walnut/bubinga AB II - brighter maybe (due to the maple?) How is this different from an AB-II? (besides fretless and 6-string) thanks

The two main differences are the body wood, alder instead of walnut, and the neck, maple instead of bubinga, but I think you got that already. Maybe someone has some experience/speculation about the tonal differences.

I'd love to go for it. Want to try out a 6 string DW. Want a fretless DW. love the setup. I'd want to swap out the pups for Mach II - like you (John H) did. I think that would make for some nice tone options. But i don't have the cash. I have to sell my Turner Ren 5 fretless. we'll see what happens.

I'll pass on the Turner, though...I have some fretless plans myself  Mark
