Hi, How does the FD3 P-tone pickup differ in sound from a standard FD3 in Afterburners? Are there any audio examples anywhere? Thanks

I'm sorry to say I don't have a before and after audio, or any audio to help out here. I did replace the stock neck pickup in my AB-1 with a P tone. I can say it has been a big improvement, it was super easy to do, and of all the bass related gee gaws I've ever spent $150 on, the biggest bang for the buck. I'd been on the fence about selling this bass. As much as I loved everything about it, the sound wasn't doing it for me. I loved the sound of my Super P/J's, especially the passive P tone setting and one click back from that. So dropping a P tone in was pretty much a low risk, no brainer for me. The transplant took about half an hour and a soldering iron. The shop sends a schematic with the pickup. My bass wiring didn't match the drawing so I re-soldered all the wires and got great results. The blueqube really kicks now. The sound is much more P like, more aggressive and mid present. Before, I felt like the bass lacked punch and was too modern and refined sounding. Now, I've got it strung with TI jazz flats and it sounds and plays great. Retro P sound with a very cool flavor from the long scale. Check out the Dingwall owners threads on Talkbass, you'll find plenty of chatter about this pickup option. Also, lots of discussion in the "basses" section of this forum.

Thanks for the info singlemalt. I'm debating converting my ABII 5. Either that or getting this option some time down the road when I order another bass. It sounds like there isn't any down side, other than possibly missing the modern tone in certain scenarios. I'm assuming the series/parallel settings are also enhanced/different with the new pickup. If I go with converting my ABII, despite the relative ease of install, I might see if I can send it in to Dingwall to do it.
