I figure this new model deserves it's own thread. Here is the final version of the ABZ. We are using the new Combustion shells, however the pickups are FD-3's. Combustion pickups might be an option for aftermarket mods. This one weighs 8lbs 3oz and is off to Bass Northwest today.

Tyler, are we going to hang out when you get your bass? I'm thinking once you get it, it's high-time for a Saskatoon GTG!

Ya man lets do it! I'll keep you posted. My band is riding me to get bass tracks done for our EP, so we might have to wait just a little bit. I told them I'm waiting for the Dingwall and they can shove it 'till then. haha. Tyler

Has anyone played an AB1 and an ABZ that can do a tone comparison between the two? I've been saving my pennies to get back into the Dingwall fold, and I've been primarily trying to find a used AB1 with FD3 pickups, just like the one I regrettably sold about 3 years ago. However, the ABZ has me intrigued. I can probably afford a brand new ABZ, which is a lot easier to find than a used AB1 at this point. I know the two basses would have a lot of similarities, but can anyone elaborate on what the differences are? I can venture a guess based on previous experiences with different alder and swamp ash basses, but I would like to hear it from someone who has experiences with both basses. I'm sure that the ABZ is just as "nice" as the AB1. I just want to make sure I get the right bass for me.

Is that you, FL Knifemaker? You're the only other person I'm aware of with Dingwall experience in the budding metropolis of Lakeland. Wish I could help with the ABZ Q's but I have yet to try one.

Just bought my Z2(LSS) there and they are great to do business with. Not that far from you either I presume.

FL Knifemaker lives on the north side, I live on the south side. Never met him face to face, but we've chatted a couple of times on TB. He was one of the guys who urged me, almost pleading with me, not to sell my AB1, but my finances were such that I had to. I'm not as "visible" a forum participant over there as he is, but I've put in plenty of good words for Sheldon and crew. I'm excited to get back in the fold. Unfortunately, between work, my family, and my band, I rarely, if ever, have time to get over to Bass Central. I love that place, the guys that work there are fantastic. In fact, that was the first place where I ever laid hands on a Dingwall and led me to buy my AB1 that I used to have. If I can't get any good hands-on info here, I might make the drive (its about 1.5 hours drive each way). But I trust, from experience, the forumites here to give good info. Its just a matter of whether anyone here has had the chance to play both basses or not.

I sold my first Dingwall (a blackburst AB1) to him several years back when I was living there (FSC). Worst decision of my life.
its about 1.5 hours drive each way[/quote:aw2gpu9a] Man...I used to make in much less than that. But then again I was a stupid college student in a sports car. :)

I am now officially part of the Dingwall club. Paul from Underdog hand delivered it to me at work about an hour ago. I am SO stoked right now. Band is jamming tonight, and first gig is set for next Thursday Arpril 1 at The Roxy on Broadway here in Saskatoon. Band Wars 6 round 1. I'll post pics when I get a chance, and I'll post my review hopefully tomorrow. WOOOOO!!! Tyler

Great to hear! 5-str? What finish? Give us some stats! Cheamo, do you have time off around easter? I smell a Saskatoon get-together coming very shortly. Are you game Tyler? :) Edit: I read your old post. 4 string blackburst. Can't wait to see it!

Ya I'm game, don't know how much time I'll have around Easter though with all the church and family and stuff. Keep me posted though. Jammed last night, amazingly light (7lbs 4oz), still getting used to the longer scale and the fanned frets. This is only my second bass, I've never had to get used to a different one. Pickups sound awesome, really clean and crisp, and I can really get the tone I've been looking for out of my amp. I'm running the pickups both in series. Love the sound. I thought I ordered Blackburst, but it looks more like just black, sticker says "Trans Black". If you're in the right angle in the right light you can see the purple better. Not that I'm complaining, it looks badass. Looks like that matt black Combustion w/ maple fingerboard Jjango drew up. I love it.

We don't get a chance to experience many 4-strings out of this shop. They are always a treat when we do. Sometimes the color of the wood clashes with the trans black and I have to go a little darker to make it look right.

Thats kind of what I thought was the reason for the really dark finish. But either way, it still looks awesome. What hard shell case works well with the ABZ's, or the AB's for that matter, anyone know? Gig bag is nice, but I'd much rather have mine in a hard shell during transport. Thought about making my own, we make custom aluminum toolboxes for pickups and semi's at work, so I have the resources, but not cost effective.

Otherwise, SKB. Just check the neck support carefully for any hard bits under the fuzzy cloth. They can dent the neck.

Oh, come on, guys. Quit holding back. I'm jones-ing to see a shot of an ABZ-4. It just might generate another 4 string ABZ sale, hint hint wink wink. :o Mark
If you're in the right angle in the right light you can see the purple better.[/quote:8kerdho5] My blackburst Afterburner turns purple in bright light. My black '76 Thunderbird bass turns deep green in the sunlight. Very strange. Mark
