Hey, I have been drooling over Dingwalls off and on for awhile and decided to finally join. Some TBers may recognize my name, I post in the effects section way more than anywhere else though. So anyways, I am really interested in trying a fan-fret bass. Obviously a Combustion is the gateway. Currently my main gigging bass is a Big Al SSS 4. I have owned 5ers but it has been awhile. Do you guys think I would be biting off a lot to chew switching to fan-frets and a 5 string at once. I am in college so keeping the Big Al and buying the Combustion are not really an option curently. I really gig about 2-3 times a month lately because school is getting busy, so if I plan right I can have a bit of time to adjust. Also, I tend to like modding things. How good of a modding platform is a Combustion? From simple stuff like new tuners, pickups, to parallel/series switches & active/passive switches? Oh yeah, could a Dingwall bridge from another model be installed easily on a Combustion? I have a Roland VB-99 and curently use a Roland GK-3B pickup. Is there room for the GK-3B between the bridge pickup and the bridge? Thanks for any help. edit: I realize that the v2 Combustion has an active/passive switch

I really am enjoying both of your early Dingwall experiences. Yeah, the Fan-frets and Multiscale make sense to me as well. I definately feel right about making this change.

I am pretty sure that I am going to buy the White one off of TB. It is so cheap (relatively speaking of course). It is a v1. I tend to like Chunkier necks. That way I can play it, really decide what, if any, mods/upgrades I would like to do to it. I have found a place to paint it for a decent price, so now I will try and figure out which color I want, but I think they got it right with the Candy Tangerine. I should be pulling the trigger tonight.

[b:18flcecz]COMBUSTION SHIPS TOMORROW!!!!![/b:18flcecz] So Excited  I almost went for an ABZ 5, and the seller of that bass and I talked on the phone. He having owned several Dingwalls, was really honest with me. He has had a Combustion before, and used the same head that I use (Orange AD200B) extensively. After I described the tone that I am after he said that the ABZ 5 would probably be a little less zingy in the mids than I am after. He suggested that I go ahead and get the Combustion, and if I get Dingwall Fever, that the AB 2 would probably be a good fit for me. That is cool for a guy to be straight up with me and not just say what I want to hear so he could get my money.

I wouldn't leave home without my Rottweiler either. At least it's only a few days. DangerousDog_150.jpg[/attachment:2abjrbgu]

I lose....[/quote:s333ewv4] Speaking of leaving your bass behind, I have been debating taking my Dingwall with me on our European tour this fall. SO much at risk, as I still haven't seen an ABII I like better (sound or visually), which makes it technically irreplaceable. I almost lost a bass I took to Australia last winter because of same stupid, non-caring TSA guy who pried the locks on my flight case (with TSA approved locks), then didn't even close the case. The bass was just loose in the luggage when I arrived in Melbourne (completely unhurt). I think I need to get over it, take my Dingwall with me, and have faith that somehow in the worst of all case scenarios, I could get another bass I'd like almost as much! My wife (& lead singer) gets to come, but our Rottie is staying with the babysitter.

I flew from peru to germany this june and took my ABZ (with the dingwall gigbag) with me. The crew from Air France and KLM didn't even hesitate to help me storing my bass in the cabin with me.

So...IT"S HERE! I sat down and played it for 20 minutes. Wow, It is super comfortable to play, I love the neck profile, it sounds great too! That white looks so much better in person with the wood grain showing beneth. The fit and finish was about what I expected from reading online. Ummm, I pretty much feel good enough to take the bass to practice tonight. Very little ackwardness from switching the fan-frets, extended scale and fifth string. I have only been playing through my okay at best Ampeg combo amp at the house. I can't wait to hear it through Toobz because my Orange[/color:2p255l1j] AD200B is a beast. I am so stoked and glad that I got it a day early. I have a feeling that whole new can of worms has been opened in regards to Bass Gas... Lunch and I am back to jamming on this baby!

Check this out, I had some gear that would have been somewhat hard to sell so I traded for 2008 MIA Fender P Bass with a John East retro P preamp. It showed up a day early too! I just played it for a few, of course it is a high quality bass, fit and finish is a notch up from the Dingwall. I like a P neck so it feels good, the Electronics are GREAT. It doesn't excite me in the least now that the Combustion is here. I knew I was trading for the Fender so I could sell it. No problem, see ya P. In this short of a period of time, I have been corrupted. I haven't been a Fender guy for a long time. I have no regrets about getting rid of my Big Al either. I guess my main thought for a bit is whether to hold onto the Combustion or use it to move up in awhile.

Yeah, be careful with that. I started with an AB1 off Ebay and within 2 months it had a companion Z. I brought my old Carvin to practice the other day for the first time in 6mo, just for old time's sake, and while it still sounds good, it was so much of a lesser experience.

I had 98% decided on a Combustion, was leaving the shop, and my [i:p00d5srj][b:p00d5srj]wife [/b:p00d5srj][/i:p00d5srj]said, why don't you try that one with the beautiful spalted maple top? And that was it. I upgraded before I even left the shop.

I am just still blown away, what a great instrument. I am going to weigh out upgrading so quickly very carefully. I have another piece of gear I am in the midst of selling for $1500. A part of me says hey that is almost a used AB1, I know where one is at for not much more than that. The other part of me says, Use that money to buy an engagement ring. I probably should buy the ring. I already have a use for the money from when I sell the Fender, my health insurance. So, I could pull a few more strings, I think a friend of mine would buy the Combustion, and I would sell a guitar that I don't play, plus maybe sell a pedal or two and I could have that AB1... IDK. I am very pleased with the Combustion. I could be very happy for awhile with it. I also would love to have a keeper. First World Problems.
