Hi guys! I'm a brand new user from an (g)old Dingwall AB1, which serial number is 3403. But I notice that the control knobs aren't the same as the ones used today. So, I'm wonder if someone has changed it... or my knobs are some kind of "old style" original knobs. Could anyone help me? Here are some pics: [img:22qmokkc]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2700922/Photo%208-25-15%2C%2014%2010%2022.jpg[/img:22qmokkc] [img:22qmokkc]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2700922/Photo%208-25-15%2C%2014%2010%2004.jpg[/img:22qmokkc]

In a word, yes. Those are the original knobs. Sheldon designed and produced the now-current ones sometime around 2006. If you dig through the Dingwall message board archives, you'll find a post with him introducing them. Here is a picture of the 2005 Afterburner 1 I used to have: [img:1wyi2jhz]https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/14737242166_295807fd8c_b.jpg[/img:1wyi2jhz] I retrofitted the new knobs once they were available. Should you want to, you can too: https://www.dingwallguitars.com/purchas ... et-5-copy/

Well, it's not too far off in vintage from my old WPB Dingwall. I'm guessing 2003/04 from the lack of a switch for the BluEQube. Does it have a push pull for it, or is it before Sheldon added it. In the past Sheldon and the Shop have provided dating info from SN, so you should be able to nail it down fairly easily.

[quote="raphagarcia":qcch0lze]Yeah! Actually, it have the push-pull for BluEQube! Is it a good information to discover its age? lol [/quote:qcch0lze] It helps narrow it down. The original BluEQube was the push/pull version. I think Sheldon eventually moved to the switch because the push/pull units weren't as dependable as a standard switch. Later AB1's saw a few changes...the first you've noted was the control knobs, again (around 2006 IIRC). There were then changes in the pickups, moving from the FD-3's (that's what you have) which are wired in parallel internally to FD-3-4L and Mach II. With the pickups wired in series, it was easier to get a sound closer to what the BluEQube was doing and that made it superfluous, not to mention, IIRC that it was designed to tame a certain resonant peak which was no longer present. I didn't pay too much attention to the dates, but that was after my 2005 and before my Zebra/Voodoo was built in 2008. Another step down the road and you'll notice that there was an additional change to the shell shape, with a curve to the pickups, sometime around 2012 or so? If you really were motivated you could dig through the posts on the forum and see when things were introduced.

I'm definitely interested to know the exact year of my AB1! I've sent an e-mail to tech at dingwallguitars dot com and I'm waiting for any response. After that, I will dig through this forum to know every inch about this bass! :D

It looks like the curved pickups showed up a bit earlier than I thought...mid to late 2010. They trickled down from the Primas of that era to the AB and Z's. I'm sure Sheldon will be along and straighten out the time line. I've been distracted by my project in removing the finish off the back of my V/Z's neck for the past 8 years or so.

The FD-1s have magnets you can see underneath, no sticker. FD-3s - all black on the bottom. Also, here's the build date registry: http://www.dingwallguitars.com/serial-number-search/
