I agree, that most of the modern repro stuff doesn't look right to me. But if you can find something that is close to the real celluloid look, I think it looks great with CAR, or any of the 'classic' custom fender colors. The true color of the celluloid is a off-white-grey-green color that's not early as green as people make things today. Almost all the real ones I've handled in the past 15 or 20 years are also not glossy but have a 'flat' appearance. If you're in the market of doing somewhat classic looking Jazz and Precision style instruments though, it may be something to keep in mind for the future.
I also have a hard time with modern tortoise shell. It doesn't look ANYTHING like what was used in the 1960's and 70's. I can't believe that NO ONE can get it right.
