My first Dingwall arrived today! It a used ABI 5-string in a beautiful natural finish. I'm very excited! I'm more of a hobbyist and wannabe than a seasoned bassist. This is my fourth bass overall and my first one that cost over $250. The guy I bought it from bought in at Bass Central in FL back in 2003 and has taken good care of it. The case has a sticker on it that says DINGWALL Model: AB5-5-NAT (or AB5-S-NAT) Serial #: 3485 I look forward to getting very familiar and comfortable with this baby over the coming years. This is definitely a keeper! :)

welcome to the family, errr addiction. These are amazing basses, and i know you'll love every detail of Sheldon's craftsmanship Thats said- since its an 03 model, what do you have for knobs/switchs, and do you know if it comes w/ FD2s or FD3s. How would you describe the tone.

Is there any way to find out what it's got based on the serial number? Wow, great looking bass. I'm not usually a fan of natural finishes, but that truly looks good. Sure beats that $250 Squire P-bass, huh? That's at least what I started on. When I finally got my Combustion, it blew the doors off anything I had ever played, including my MTD Kingston (I don't mean sounded better - BLEW THE DOORS OFF). :D I'll be getting more, I just gotta get the cash. Anybody need a kidney? :P

That's one clean, nice looking bass. The gold/honey hue and the black hardware work really well together, and with a plain fret board to boot....[b:muehu9bv]wham[/b:muehu9bv]!![/size:muehu9bv] Congratulations

Dave-- does the last knob pull up to activate bluEQube? if so its probably FD1 I know you hadnt heard a Dingwall before this, but to me an FD1 have a zingy punchy tone, its quite modern sounding, midrangy. Personally i love it. I feel recently Sheldon has tried to get more of a back to roots hybrid of modern/ warmth from his FD3 and greater
Dave-- does the last knob pull up to activate bluEQube? if so its probably FD1[/quote:23xogd4u] I hadn't even thought to check that, but now that you mention it, I just tried it, and yes, the last knob pulls up. I haven't had a chance to plug it in yet since discovering that, so I don't know what difference it makes, but it will be interesting to play with. Is there a general consensus regarding which pickups are best? Or is it just a matter of what type of tone you prefer? Anyone have any sound clips comparing the various pickup options for the AB1?

The "S" in the model number AB5-S NAT means "Standard", I believe, which should indicate a bass without a fancy top wood. Nearly all ABI's with fancy tops will have flame maple. Yours has no fancy top wood. I like it! Frank prefers FD1s, and wishes they still made them. I have never heard the FD1s, but they are said to be more mid-heavy, like a Pbass (right, Frank?). I wish the shop would reissue them. The current FD3s are no slouch, though. The knob that pulls up activates the bluEQube, which is a mid-cut switch, useful for slapping and to back the mids out when you need to. You are going to love that bass. If not, PM me, and we'll make a deal. Mark

Is the neck stained or a dark wood? I like that a whole lot better looks wise than having that maple right in the middle of a nicely painted body.

NaH-- Marks AB bass has a wenge cap on the end to darken the wood-it doesnt show the maple like the other ABI basses. DaveC-- In fact I do love FD1, and my personal opinion is that they are one of the best sounding Dingwall p'ups created. Mid heavy, punchy like a P bass on steroids. I suspect you have them and to me--just solo the rear pickup. Barky w/out bite, punchy and zingy w/ ahint of sizzle when you dig in. They are special, and unfortunately came and went quickly in the Dingwall p'up lineup. Apparently they were a joint project between Sheldon and a local bass company names FURY basses in canada. As Mark mentions FD3 are standard issue since the early 2004, and everyone seems to love them as well. They are more traditional sounding, but still maintain a Dingwall-esque presence. Anyway the FD1s are my personal preference

My current AB1 is from 2002 and definitely has FD1s but my previous AB1 was 2006 IIRC, fully stock and I [i:1kouwu0u]thought[/i:1kouwu0u] it also had FD1s. I don't remember it well enough to compare them in my head though. I barely even remember what I had for lunch! Dim sum will do that to you though... :D

Let someone else have a turn! :P I'd totally be interested in that if it came up for sale, very clean looking bass - I love it! Alas, Dave, you probably will too, so I hope you enjoy it! :)

Sorry guys, but this is definitely a keeper. :) But it's nice to know that there would be some interest if I suddenly lost my job, my house, etc., and it was down to keeping the Dingwall or putting food on the table. Tough choice, but at least I'd have options! :)

My parents live about 10 miles from the seller, so they picked it up for me and shipped it. BTW, what part of the Smoky Mountains are you near? I'm up in the Tri-Cities, TN area.
