I just finished the NAMM Z3 prototype body. It will go into sanding and prep tomorrow. Trying to decide on the color now. The front runners are a really vibrant greenburst or blueburst. Feel free to cast your vote. All the best in the new year. Sheldon

[quote="FrankM":ftwczs8m]Awesome news on the first Z3 going to a good home. I hope its gets lots of playing time But we gotta ask Sheldon about when the idea of a 3 pickup Z bass was concieved. This has been an idea that he and I were kicking around for a few yrs when we were discussing my new Dingwall. Not that it matters, since all of us benefit from each other ideas.[/quote:ftwczs8m] And the credit goes to Frank M from the great state of Texas. :)

IIRC, it was originally Frank's idea to hotrod the Z2 into a Z3. Let's face it, lots of great ideas come from our fair state - Shelby Cobras and Mustangs, barbecue, early Anna Nicole Smith  , and Dingwall mutations like the Z3, lams on ABs, and painted headstocks on SJs (I [i:36hmyex0]think[/i:36hmyex0] that last one was mine ) Oh, yeah, let's not forget the SJ itself. OK, I'll stop now- I don't want to make our Dingwall bros in other states hate us! Go, Cowboys! (Sorry- that last one just slipped out!) Mark

I am happy that the Z3 idea originated from one of the hardcore Dingwall lovers (not naming anyone yet, just for the sake of the game now  ) The idea of a multi pickup Dingwall occurred to me and discussed it with Sheldon 2yrs before I received my avatar OMT (which was in 2004). At that time I was not aware of anybody in the forum (or their ideas). At that very time I was talking about a 7string Dingwall too (tuned BEADGBE!!!)   The important part is that the original idea came from one of the very members of this fine forum (let it be FrankM or FRB). If Sheldon remembers that small detail he can set the record straight (no big deal though). Still, I am happy that I am the first one to ask for the Z3 materialization!!! I have to agree with Mark that many ideas come from your great state of Texas, but I was born in Canada and I am in full support of Canada's masterminds, their ideas and their ability to deliver (namely Sheldon 8)) I am really happy and proud being part of this great team of Eponymous Ding-aholics

lets see what other great ideas have come out of texas. GW bush, Roger clemens...kidding aside. It really doesn't matter where the ideas hatched from as long as all of us can reap the benefits. I figure since Fully has been on a Dingwall high for the past years showing off all those aquisitions, that we might as this a game

I admit that FrankM has at least one first with the SuperJ, and I will not be surprised if it proves out that he has another first with the Z3. I have to admit that I'd never had a first with the Super J (a confessed J non-fan; only the Super PJ has made me think positively of J**z basses) and because I find the SR5 too one-dimensional, I'd never had a chance with the Z2 either.

If this works out, I'd like to see this three pickup variation in an AB or SJ. :) I'm sorry, but Z's and Primas are just pie in the sky for most of us. :(

Frank has changed global markets w/his shorter scale J bass designs. I've never had an interest in the SJ4's but the SJ5 jj has me Dasin'.

Fully---First fretless Afterburner too....hehehe Seriously, if we could convince Sheldon on alot of ideas there would be a ton of one-offs. But Sheldon is much more pragmatic, and business-like. He sees things differently, becuase he runs a company. From my view if Sheldon didn't think making a short scaled Dingwall would be a money maker for him, i suspect he wouldn't take it on. Never mind a jazz bass fused w/ a Dingwall. I understand his point totally. Also I think Sheldon takes on projects just to learn something. He is a student of his profession. Each new project, idea, plants a seed, and these ideas show up in the next iteration. Consider the advancement of the Z3, its a slight modification to his current body style. but, IMHO, it wouldn't have happened unless he built those fatty pickups for the SJ

I can't quite remember how the idea got started. It's been a while. Today I strung up the first one and it's a whole lot of HUGE sounding.

It beautiful- Sheldon-- are you sure you can't push the 2 bridge p'ups back a little. The bass-- well just looks crowded, kinda like you couldn't decide where to put the pickups Sorry bout being critical, the colors nice :^)

Sheldon it looks like you've made a slight modification to the knobs. I like your newer knobs but have always thought they need a white line on the side and dot on the top.

IMO the basses look better w/the JJ pu config following the fanning.
