We've got a nice run of Z's going at the moment. Another one to start soon. Some of you may recognize these bodies already.
I really love the contrast of the black inlays on the maple neck too.[/quote:3dcfviw6] We made one subtle adjustment to the Sklar Bars on the 22 fret neck. We moved the 21st fret marker down toward the G string about 3/16" or so. That made the above the 12th fret arc more proportionate/symmetrical to the larger arc below the 12th fret.
Thanks, Smallmouth. Seems we were both extolling the virtues of the finish on an F bass w/ a cherry burst some months ago. I wish you could see the Leaf Burst up close and personal. It's really something. Plus, the reverse treble horn shape is just beautiful to my eye. Hopefully I'll have time to get some additional pics up next week sometime. [/quote:3gv87m54] I really love the contrast of the black inlays on the maple neck too. Everything about that bass is perfect!
How do the Phatties compare to MII's? Vintage wool?[/quote:3f6102hd] A little too early to tell about the vintage wool as I just started fiddling with tone last night and this morning. I'm mostly experimenting by running straight into a Bergantino IP112 -- no pre. I can say this for sure, the B string is incredible. The Phatties simply sound fantastic. I don't think anybody could go wrong with any of the Dingwall pickup offerings. I'll be doing some recording later tonight so that will be a good exercise for dialing in the thick, woolly tone I like so much. I don't think there will be any problem doing that with these pups and the series/par options.
Here are the full shots.[/quote:2j0b8cwz] I got my Z3 today and I've got to say, this picture doesn't EVEN begin to do it justice. The motivation for this color scheme was autumn colors, mainly the deep red and the yellow/amber of leaves as they change. In person the red is unreal, deep and vibrant, while the yellow is quite muted on the front (because, I'm guessing, the northern ash is a bit browner than the swamp ash) and less so on on the back. The headstock is a work of art, which doesn't show well in the pic. I really like the Sklar bars, which help me keep better track of where I am, especially up high on the neck. I'm really glad I did the 22 fret neck, too, as the neck pickup on the Z3 (and Z1) is closer to the end of the neck than it is on my AB II, which just means I have a bit more thumb and popping finger room (I never seem to play up too high, anyway). The neck is fantastic and already feels like an old friend. And, best of all, the tone and variety of tones are amazing. I'll get some pics up before too long that show this masterpiece of Sheldon and Jeff's off as much as my photographic skills (or lack thereof) may allow. Thanks again Sheldon and Jeff for a great experience and a great instrument. And thanks to everyone on the forum for sharing ideas, many of which went into the planning of my Z. John
I already know what your favorite settings are. :D[/quote:g6qqm01k] :D Yes you do. I really look forward to hearing what the many pickup possibilities will bring w/ the Z3 in terms of varied tone, too. I'll do a full report after I get it.

That blue one is a real beauty! Fantastic! Frank, I think Sheldon dropped the fact that the new Fatties are now standard for all Z basses...

One for Sheldon - have you ever done a Zebrawood top on a Z2/Z3? Mmmm.... Although some of those spalted maple tops look virtually as good, so there's alternatives... Waiting for the exchange rate to go up a bit more... :) EG

Man, that's some sweet bass-porn there, where can I get me one of dem basses without waiting too long? :p I have to admit I've been re-assessing my (meagre) bass collection and even thought about parting with the ABII, but now I think that's actually a good move as long as it's replaced by a Z2 or Z3! :) So yes, where are the sound-clips from existing Z2/Z3 Fatties owners? I still have no idea what they actually sound like! I generally want a bit more voice and character than my existing FD-3s, so maybe that's the ticket? As an aside, a friend of mine brought his vintage Ken Smith around and the ABII wasn't *that* much different in sound, just slightly behind in sweetness and old-school vibe. Not bad, given the Smith has matured nicely over the years and is probably worth twice as much! EG
