Hey Sheldon, I was curious if you had any solutions to the unpleasant upper mids that come out of my super J without having to adjust the tone controls on the amp as much. I find it to be most noticeable in active mode. Mike

IMO SS has an upper mid bite with Nickel Wrapped having low mid growl.

Hey, I'm actually giving steel strings a shot to see if they impact the tone.

Are they unpleasant when the band kicks in or just when soloed? Can you pinpoint the frequency?

I notice it more when I'm playing solo but I have solved the problem with a change in pickup height and slightly thicker strings.

Sheldon, Is there any way to make the tone of my bass when it is active and flat, the same as when the bass is passive with the tone nob rolled off ever so slightly? If that makes any sense. It seems to me that the tone nob is just shifting the frequency of the mids. And I much prefer the sound of the mids with those settings, but I would like to be able to use the preamp. When the tone nob is flat, and the preamp is engaged and flat, there seems to be a boost of the upper mids, so much so that is is boxy.

This should be fairly simple with a resistor and a cap in series to ground. Email tech@dingwallguitars.com for a suggested starting point. Then take that to a tech to have them fine tune the application. There's a limit to how effective our help can be via email but we can get your started at least.
