Hi, I'm new here. I was finally able to get my first Dingwall AB 1 five string, after years of watching ebay and the web, waiting for the funds to be available when the right bass popped up. It has been immaculately maintained and cared for, and will continue to be. But, the tuning keys are sticking and/or hard to turn, and are designed so that the key itself will unscrew, if the tuner is stuck. The key part is threaded onto the tuner, so instead of detuning the string, the key unscrews. I was at band practice when this happened and had to use needlenose pliers to screw the key back on tight enough to have it hold. I used a piece of cloth, but still scarred my tuner. Any suggestions on remedies for this problem? I'm an amateur bass builder/tinkerer. But, I've never had issues with tuners, other than just replacing them. Thanks, JJ

No, my problem was with detuning the B string (although several keys are tight and may become a problem, too). The counterclockwise turning of the key to lower the pitch of the B string, will also unscrew the key when the tuner sticks. If this had been at a gig, I'd have been stuck with a sharp B string and no way to tune it down to correct pitch. Every time I tightened the key back on, the B went a little higher. And I couldn't get it on tight enough to detune the string cause the post would turn. So, I held the shaft that the key screws onto with pliers, so it wouldn't turn, and tightened the key on. Basically, someone didn't anticipate this happening when they designed these tuners. And, it's probably an easy fix like lubricating them. I just wish I hadn't scarred my tuner up

There is an adjustment for tension on the Ultralights. There's a small button head hex screw on the end of the worm gear.
If the Y-key comes loose and you have time to do the fix, a drop of red Loctite on the treads should be a permanent fix.

Thanks. Tried callin, we're probably in different time zones though. I had wondered about that hex head screw. I'll do the Loctite fix. But, if I want to replace the tuner, since I scarred it up, what brands/models will work. I've read that they're special made. But, I've seen a few that have had hipshot D-tuners installed. The guy I bought it from said that if I had any problems to talk to Sheldon....this kind of customer service is unique these days and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. You've got another lifelong customer. Loosened the small hex bolt on the tuning keys, a very small amount, and that fixed the problem. Thanks Sheldon
