By checking the documentation that came with my SuperJ 5, I see that DR MH5-130 (stainless steel Low Riders) came on my bass. Great strings, by the way. I was wondering if you (Sheldon) or anyone else has any experience with the nickel version of these strings on this bass (or even an SJ4)?

Lately we've found that we like Dunlop strings even better. They were designed by a DR alum. I have a set of nickels here, but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

I have tried the lowriders and the highbeams. I prefer the highbeams as they are more flexible and have a'lighter' touch IMHO. The difference is in the core, one is hex one is round. I am intrigued by the Dunlops designed by a DR alumni. I will try to get hold of some. N

The DR High Beams are pretty much the exact same string as Dingwall strings, but the taper on the Bstring extends to far out over the PU making intonation of larger strings impossible.

I have been using the DW B on my AB with a DR set for the other 4, looks like I will have to source a different B from now on. Sheldon made a few suggestions so I will have to do some testing!

I found that when I installed a .120 tapered B string on a 34" parallel fretted neck thru bass I couldn't even get it to make a note.

Through some string trying I have discovered a great method for using any string on a SJ5, just make a retaining ring to pull back the ball end of your strings! I'll post a pic of my setup when I get a chance, but I've now got a full set of retainers to adapt to any strings I want to use, from super long scale Dingwall Steels to DR Taper Long Necks.

[/quote:1hvih4bh] Do you speak about regular Dunlop strings or Trujillo signature strings ? I'm really interested because it's really difficult to find GHS Contact Core in France. We don't have this problem with Dunlop...

Hey Folks Just put a set of DR Sunbeams on my SJ5 fretless, they fit perfectly. They are on a round core which is my preference but they are nickel plated. I have only played one show with them so far and, whilst very different from the Highbeams, they really bring out a different character in the SJ and I like them very much. N

Based on the post above, I ordered up a set of DR sunbeams, and set of the DR nickel low riders, we'll see how it goes. Anybody else like to chime in with strings that fit the SJ-5? I'm looking for something new, preferably nickel or some other slick, smooth feeling alloy, round wound. I would be into trying anything that fits in nickel. If you have strings you love on your SJ-5, I would really like to hear about them! I would even go with flats or ground wounds given a glowing review, but I hope to keep the slap sound as an option. My top choice for the SJ-4 are DR Hellborgs, and I use them on the SJ-5 with a Dingwall B. Thanks! It's time for new strings and I want a complete set. I'll report back on the new DR sets.

You see my friend, the Super J has a 35in scale not 37in like the ABZ/ABII etc, therefore you can get away with the majority of strings which are sold as Long Scale, however I really suggest you get those tapered ones which gets narrrow by the bridge saddles otherwise you'll have to fiddle with the saddle heigth adjustment, I tried GHS tapered long scale nickels and they worked fine just like the Dingwall originals, which I believe are also made by GHS.

My string order arrived last night, DR Sunbeams and a set of DR nickel Low Riders. I unpacked them and checked the length on the B strings first thing. Everything looked good so I installed the Low Riders. They come in a purple pack that says, "Low riders love to funk!" Who could resist that? DR says these are stiffer strings for lower action and they are. Even tuned down a half step, I was able to drop the action quite a bit. No truss rod adjusment was needed, there was less bow than with the previous setup, but no rattles or buzzes, evev after I lowered the saddles. I had to adjust the saddles anyway, the B is not tapered at the bridge, and the Low Riders are a thicker set of strings. The B is tapered at the nut and installs easily. B string is .130. Balance across the strings is very good, I like the stiffer feel and lower set up. They feel a lot like Payson's nickels and that's a good thing. I'll put em through the wringer tonight and see how I like them. So far so good. I will try to get the Sunbeams on this week to compare the sets before the Lowriders get too many hours on them.
