Exactly the way I want it: maple neck, old style pickups and old bridge pickup placement. It used to be a PJ, but is converted to fully J. The P-pup and pick guard is in the package to. Number four for me...[/quote:hq769h18]

Nice...Older one? mid to late 2000's from the look of it...[/quote:hq769h18]
I don't know how old; the serial number is 39XX. I really like the old pickup placement; that's what makes it my mid 70's Jazz Bass successor. I am not happy with the change in pickup placement on the newer ones, especially since you cannot custom order this setup/layout nowadays. Anyway, this is one of my two absolute favourite basses ever, and I've owned around 70 basses to this day.[/quote:hq769h18]

Nice!

[quote="Funk":2v5ckeup]That's crazy to see the progression of Sheldon's designs of the early voodoo prima to the basses he is making now. Pretty remarkable!!! Can't even imagine what the basses will be like in 5 years. It's only getting better![/quote:2v5ckeup]

That voodoo prima is a really early one, one of the very first from the details and info I've heard...When I was working with Sheldon on the pickups, they were a size that didn't seem to match the others of the era, and it tracked back to them actually being 4-string Barts rather than 5 string. With the body decal, the pickup size, the straight pickups, and the fact that the bridge isn't anchored through-body this suggests that it really is one of the first.

That said, there's some stuff that feels straight up Dingwall and some things that you can tell are different. If you're used to a current highly sculpted Dingwall neck carve with it's complex geometry (compound angle headstock, compound radius fretboard, compound asymmetric neck profile) this isn't it. It's of the same lineage but definitely different to play.

Nice maple neck! Nice everything! My first bass ever was a black '78 Jazz Bass with maple neck. Only blocks and bindings "differ"...

I haven't done this for a while, so why not. Here's a very very early Voodoo-Prima. It came to be with the original Bartolini pre-amp blown out wired like a standard Jazz bass. That setup wasn't working great for me, so I dropped in a new preamp at 18v (OBP2), upgraded to a modern 4-way switch, and Sheldon kindly did a set of FD-3's for me in this weird mini-size.

The bass remains somewhat of a mystery to me...it's got a serial number that's higher than some later Dingwalls, but has all the telltale signs of the very earliest production run (I've been told it's one of the first 12).

Mahogany body, quilted maple top and back, pau ferro fretboard and the classic 11 ply early Dingwall neck.

This bass is in my rotation as my gigging backup bass these days.

Although my main bass is still this one:

Hey folks, happy to say I've received my first Dingwall. This is a 2012 AB1 with an alder body, wenge contrast layer, and a beautiful flamed maple top. I can barely put it down and when I do, I just stare at it for a bit. Great bass.

Just a kool kat with a cool bass:
[img:23p8xunc]http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd169/bassmayhem/880f26a0-a06d-44ba-a27f-bb803d65195e_zpsfywtqdwc.jpg[/img:23p8xunc]
I couldn't resist earlier this summer to bring the Gem out in the sunlit garden, under the lavender and the little yellow Brimstone, when all of a sudden my cat Simba decided to show who is the real owner of the bass. His new favourite resting place is down in my music room/workshop in the basement, right on my pedalboard. The soft side of the Velcro is soooo nice. (I've just installed a few pedals; no room for more when there is a cat lying around...)
