Yup.

That's the GREEEEEN!

That's about the ONLY solid color I'm digging these days.

The other night Lee was playing that Z2 on Letterman with Lovett...but he was burried waaay in the back and got no face-time (neither did the bass), unfortunately.

That color really makes my heart beat faster.

Cool. What color LED's are you doing? I'm assuming that you're only doing side dots? Also, who are you having do the job? I know Sims is the 'big' aftermarket LED company for instruments.

I also wanted to point out in that picture of the AB1 body the curve of the horns. THAT is the design feature that was one of the big factors in me buying an AB. I love that strong curve, and it's really a great design element. I'm a junkie for good design in everyday life, both for subtle ergonomic features and visual appeal (not a surprise that I've studied art/design theory along with my usual intellectual explorations). I'm surprised that more basses have such little thought in this aspect of shape and build, but in lots of cases I feel like basses are 'UN-designed' by most builder.

The design...
Good point. One of the reasons why me also have bought the bass. I like that colour very much. So my Dingwall became Honey AmberBurst. And the Fanned fret system. No one who have heard of it or even seen that!
And the body shape, the kind a like 'wave' bottom. And ofcourse the horns, like it goes trough the neck. It's like, normal but different!
So i have bought the Dingwall. And i am very happy! But i want to have ONE thing, the LED's. I started playing bass when i was 13. (5 years ago) Very big Mark King fan... That's why i first wanted to have a Status Bass WITH LED's...!

Indeed side LED's in green. A bit "Classic look". But also a custom design option. (oooh, i LOVE custom haha) The Dingwall logo on the 12th fret in Abalone like you see on the Prima Artist! Hand cutted and underneeth it, a copple of green LED's. So when you switch on, yo see the logo light up in green and when it is off, you see that great peace artwork of the Abalone logo. For the Logo and the side LED's two different (Dingwall) toggle switches and a battery compartment. Very cool...but a lot of money haha. But i can say that i am the first Dingwall owner with LED's. And that is something to be proud of!
Greetings,

Erwin

Hey Usiel,

That's pretty cool! Can you give us more info on the bass? What's the scale length, was is a custom job for you, any other differences in materials from a standard AB1, and let us know about how it sounds and plays....

I also use a Mesa 400+...but am currently using a Schroeder cabinet.

This is my 1st post here, but I've traded several e-mails with Sheldon...

My first Dingwall was an Afterburner 1. F'n BRILLIANT bass. After ~30 seconds playing it, I knew that any other makers' 5-string would be a waste of my time.

Fast forward 8 months and I find myself in a band using drop-A tuning all the time. The mere idea of any other bass becomes completely unthinkable. I start looking around for a used Dingwall (as a backup to my AB I) and find a used, purple Z2 at a SCANDALOUSLY fantastic price, it just needs a new input jack and some electronic TLC. The Z2 is so far beyond perfect for me that it IMMEDIATELY becomes my numero uno.

The only problem I have is that my Z2 has WAAAAY more output than my AB I, so I install an Aguilar OBP-3 in my AB I, trade out the pickup selector for a blend pot, and get rid of the volume control (I don't ever turn down; doing so is NOT rock & roll). Now, it's just blend, mids, and stacked bass/treble.

It's a cool setup, but not being the type to leave well enough alone, I observe that the Z2 is still quite a bit hotter than the AB I. I also observe that the Z2 has room for two 9v batteries, but only uses one (it came to me with a Bartolini NTMB). So, I switch the preamps. Now, I have a trim pot in the preamp on my AB I so I can boost its output to match my Z2.

Once the planets are aligned, I can easily go from one Dingwall to the other. The AB I still gets plenty of play due to the fact that its pickup locations allow me a better facsimile of the classic P-bass tone, while the Z2 is very MusicMan-esque.

I love them both.

Glad to see this forum -- these basses deserve to take over the world...

Were did you get the Agular 3 thing... That is a active circuit for the BB II isn't it? I want to have that to! I like buttons and switches, but it have to give a great sound! And with Dingwall knowledge...
What was the price of that?
Greetings, Erwin

Erwin,
The Aguilar is a very nice preamp and is easy to find. You can get them several places on the 'net -- Musician's Friend for example. I got mine at Guitar X here in Denver, who also happens to be a Dingwall dealer.

Honestly, the biggest benefit from all those hours of soldering (and I do NOT enjoy soldering...) was the equalization of output levels. I use a decent amount of effects and it was always tough to compensate for the disparate outputs.

I rarely use the tone controls. My dream Dingwall would have a maple fretboard, Z2 pickup scheme, and the 4 way switch. No volume, no tone, no nonsense. A full-on rock & roll wrecking ball.
Maybe some day when I'm rich...

John

My 1999 Voodoo Zebra 6. This was former Dingwall endorser Magic's bass that he got in partial payment for a production gig. He plunked on it a couple of times, then he put in back in the bag and it lived in a closet for 4 years untouched. I found and won it off ebay April 16th, 2004, for my birthday. Some present, huh? It was like-new, and I paid $1825, a steal. Now, lets see if the pix will post!
