I've noticed a few others are interested in doing the same thing - taking their precious new Dingwall Combustion and cutting it up. **This thread isn't so much about the black hardware, new preamp, new pups, etc. as much as the specifics of moving the neck pickup right up next to the bridge pickup.** Obviously, unless you plan on getting really creative, you would need to rout the two cavities together and then cover the rest of the old cavity with a pickguard. That's partly where this thread comes in. I want to gather as many of us as possible to get the best quality and best price on custom pickguards from Chandler Guitars (manufacturer Sheldon is using). I would also like to discuss DIY methods since I'm quite into the idea of doing the whole thing at home, but have never done routing on my basses.

I wish I could participate, no signs of any funds for a Combustion :( If I were to buy one, I don't think I'd even plug it in before making it a poor man's Z2. There's two more things to plan on, regarding that particular mod. 1) The stock Combustion neck pickup is wired in parallel, while the bridge pup is wired in series. I'm guessing just moving the neck pup wouldn't be that good, as the bridge pickup would overwhelm the neck pup in terms of output. The Lee Sklar Z2 has both pups wired in series, so I guess that, by his experience, it would be best to have both Combustion pickups wired in series. Maybe it would be possible to send the neck pickup back to Sheldon and get a series wired pup for less $$ than just buying a third pickup. If I were to do this mod, I'd either get a series FD-3A pickup or buy two FD-3 4Ls. 2) FD-3A pickups are wider than FD-3 pickups. The extra pup width increases the distance between coils. I'm guessing a Combustion modded this way should sound fatter than a Z2 because of that. Although it's unlikely, FD-3 coils inside FD-3A shells positioned like in the third picture[/url:80op0usd] could create a better sound. If you beg Sheldon enough.. Anyhoo, I don't think it would be possible to fit standard (narrow) FD-3 pickups to this mod without changing the pickguard shape to cover the old pickup cavity.

How many would be interested at seeing a C2 model at some point in the future?
How many would be interested at seeing a C2 model at some point in the future?[/quote:2ovxan8m] That was sort of why I started this thread. I notice a trend around here - if enough people want something, Sheldon does it (Read: the CAG combustions, the Z3, the whole Super J line). I had the impression more people were interested, but maybe I was wrong. I would probably put off a C2 production model.

LOL Forget that last post. I started writing it right after Sheldon posted, and when I actually posted this morning I saw all the responses. So I'm not sure now.

I would look into it, but not sure if I would get one. Good idea though, I think.

Look-wise I love this idea, but I think I would rather have the standard pickup configuration for more versatility in tone, not that I've played a Z2 configured bass before though. If I was in a financial situation that allowed me to purchase one of these fine instruments, I would have an extremely difficult time choosing between an all black and maple like this or a blonde or a CAG Combustion.

If anything, I would be more inclined to move the neck pickup the other way to get a bigger rounder tone, but that's just me. I think the standard C1 will suit me fine.

I usually run it in the second position on the rotary in passive mode. It's like trying to control an elephant in active mode. :o Mark

If I had a Z2 or Z3 I probably wouldn't want a C2 either. Combustions are supposed to be an affordable option for those of us who want a Dingwall but can't afford most models. If I had the scratch to spare, sure I'd buy a Z2 or Z3...but I don't see that happening any time soon. In the meantime, I'd love something like a C2 to satisfy my longing for a more MM tone.

I'm going to guess it would probably go over really well with the MM crowd...I personally think it would sound great with a fretless.
How many would be interested at seeing a C2 model at some point in the future?[/quote:2fu84oz9] Just thinking out loud tonight. What about doing an ABZ2 instead? Part of it is personal, I want my next DW to have that configuration, but I'm starting to think an ABZ would be more like what I'm looking for. Also trying to figure out if this makes sense for Sheldon to manufacture. Thoughts from Dr. Wood?
