I had a quick thought while picking up supplies. One of our sweetest combinations is an SJ4 with the latest version of our P-pickup in the neck and a Mach II bridge pickup. Who would be interested in an FD-3 neck pickup with a big-bottom P flavor? These would be to replace an existing FD-3 neck pickup.
Funny thing. Was just thinking about this today Sheldon, I wrote you about my Super J and the profile of the neck. I think it is just to narrow for my hands. I have come to the conclusion the best spacing for me is a 1-5/8 nut. Been dreaming about the perfect bass and I think I need a Super P![/quote:33rpmfmp] The AB necks are 42 mm less a little for finish sanding and you're almost exactly 1-5/8".

Thanks for the link, very cool. Sorry for digressing from the original post. I am going to keep my eyes peeled for a 4 string AB. Still think a Super P would be pretty sweet..

I'd like to see a 4 string Dingwall Super P. 34"-36.25" 3+1 SJ headstock slightly stubbier/shorter Combustion SJ or Z neck pocket so there's no neck heel showing on the front. Priced in the range of ABZ's or slightly cheaper for a passive version. Reversed P pu option 19mm spacing Stellar tone circuit for an upcharge The Turbo Super P would be a huge hit imo. Anyone else feelin' it?
would you ever be able to make a P pup in the SF shell?[/quote:2ignxrna] +1 - That way I could convert my Super J to a Super PJ...

Of all the sounds I can get the P bass passive on the Super J gets the most milage by far. I'd love to have that option on the SJ-5. Or on the Afterburners. A "drop in" replacement would be perfect.

Hey Sheldon, why did you stop installing the series/parallel switch for the neck pickup? The series mode on neck pickup soloed is a great P-like sound, having it in parallel doesn't quite compare IMO. EDIT: Maybe the series/parallel switch was never meant to be installed in ABs, and it's only my bass specific. In that case, thanks Funk , and maybe it should become available on all ABs. I would certainly request it. Or have the pickup switch to series automatically when it's soloed? More complex, but compact and fancy :)

I'm pretty sure Funk did that on his own.

I took the BluEqube out to get the series/parallel option for the neck pu. That's a brilliant idea Bo to have the wiring: neck solo'd = series, but in the other settings keep it parallel. I agree with Sheldon that the neck pu in parallel mixed with a series MII sounds fantastic. Sheldon could you wire the bass to have the neck solo'd = series and parallel in the other settings? Bocete your renderings of the Fanned SR5 were brilliant. Can you do a rendering of a Turbo Fan P bass? Specs: P symmetrical body 34-36.25" 4 string Dingwall SP pu in the standard position and reversed P, fanned of course, how 'bout a double p pu version too an SJ headstock 4 inline and a 3+1 just for grins. For now leave out the extra routing for cheaper production Sheldon palming his forehead says, "Don't I have enough models already"? You could farm out the P bodies and do your own necks. You could have the fretboard overhang the body at an angle to accommodate the upper fanning. No one else has a bass model like this. I have this design of a buzzard-meets-scarab built around the as-is AB neck... :) But a P bass should be much easier to do, and I'd love to see how faster did I become by the end of the SuperRay5 "build". Creating the headstock is probably the most difficult part of the entire build. The neck heel is impossible to model. So headstock variations would be just too time-consuming to pull off: better just the classic 4+0 headstock. (could you trademark the term 4+0, Sheldon?)

Any more news on the FD3 P-tone pickup, Sheldon? Are you favouring a particular direction? I think people have asked you some of the following questions already. Perhaps you couldn't answer before because you had not tested every idea or you had not made any final decisions. How big of a difference will this pickup be to a standard FD3? Were you just thinking of tweaking the elements – such as different wire, magnets, windings – or will it be a radically different internal design? Will the pickup have four leads for series/parallel switching? Or will it be hard wired in series like a typical P-pickup? Will the coils be arranged like a typical P-pickup? Like this, in the case of a 5-string bass: BEA-- ---DG Or will they be reversed like a typical FD3? ---DG BEA-- Or, as Funkshwey requested, will the split point be changed, grouping the A-string with the treble coil instead of the bass coil? Either: BE--- --ADG or --ADG BE--- Last question: Do you regret opening up this can of worms? The reason I'm asking all this is because I have been planning to order FD3-4L neck pickups for my AB2-5 and AB1-6 ever since the 4L came out, but I have been waiting to see what happens with this proposed pickup first. Should I wait?

Bump and will this be available for ABZ's? When I tested an ABI I had the feeling the neck solo was a little to scooped and I would end up 95% of the time in series. With more mids and bass in the neck, I could use the series setting as a boost!?

Sheldon, being relatively new here, I am not certain which pickup is the FD-3, is it one of those presently fitted to the ABZ and the the Combustion? The website lists them as FD-3 4L. are they the same thing? and is that what comes on a Super J P/J? Thanks

I am planning to order an ABZ6 somewhere in January, but now I know about this, I definately want it with the P sounding neck pup. When do you think the pup will be available for ABZ6's? They [i:a11629wn]are[/i:a11629wn] gonna be available, right?
