I had a quick thought while picking up supplies.

One of our sweetest combinations is an SJ4 with the latest version of our P-pickup in the neck and a Mach II bridge pickup.

Who would be interested in an FD-3 neck pickup with a big-bottom P flavor? These would be to replace an existing FD-3 neck pickup.

100% of us so far want an FD3 P pu. :D

Will it be in an FD3 soapbar cover?

I'm actually currently trying to get Carey at Nordstrand to do a P pu in a soap bar cover.

Sounds good to me...I'd drop one into my AB-1 without hesitation.

Yes. It will be a direct FD-3 retrofit.

Its funny, because I loved the single pickup in my 73P and had no qualms with the way it sounded for many years, but always go series with my AB-1 when it gig situations...as the neck alone always sounded kind of flat to me for lack of a better term. This sounds like it might change that.

Even though the SJ5 is getting most of the playing time right now, this [i:12jkj74i]does[/i:12jkj74i] sound interesting. I'd be willing to do it (provided it's not [i:12jkj74i]too[/i:12jkj74i] expensive).

+1 $400+ for a pair of pu's is a deal killer for most.

You really had to do this just when I installed my new FD-3s, right? :D
Anyway, even if I won't be making the switch anytime soon, it sounds good.

Wait... there's a new version of the SJ P pickup? How is it different from the pickup in my 2007 Super PJ4?

Also what's different in the proposed FD3? Would you switch the coils around to have the treble side closer to the bridge and the bass side closer to the neck. I'm fine with what I've got but I would love to get more P tone! I voted yes.

I would recommend having the G, D & A poles closer to the neck joint for more even bass response.

Isn't that the way it is already on the FD3? I don't remember where the A pole is, though.

Would it be a 4L? You know, series/parallel between the coils, or would you optimize it for one setting?

Just curious, I doubt I'd be getting them anytime soon even though I love the P pickup.

I don't even have my afterburner yet and I've only ever played a Dingwall bass one time for about two minutes, but I'd try one of these puppies. I can't help myself from tweaking my basses and I do love a good meaty P bass tone!

Sounds like a great idea. The P pup could add a little more grind to the DW sound.

Sheldon, just for curiosity's sake, would you ever be able to make a P pup in the SF shell?

Voted No, simply because I can't justify the dough. I'm very happy with the tone I get from my my FD-1 Neck and FD-3 4L in bridge. I'm already trying to find a way to mod my upcoming Combustion with an Audere Preamp (an idea for my ABII that was killed due to having to lose the 4-position selector) and Z2 positioning. The Audere itself will cost as much as one pup and hopefully does awesome stuff by changing resonances :)

VERY interested!

Dingbat - I can't compare the NP-4 precision in my Super P/J to the earlier version (this is the only one I have experienced), but I can say that I really, really, like it.... 8)

Funny thing. Was just thinking about this today Sheldon, I wrote you about my Super J and the profile of the neck. I think it is just to narrow for my hands. I have come to the conclusion the best spacing for me is a 1-5/8 nut. Been dreaming about the perfect bass and I think I need a Super P!
