For those who have played both version of the Super J, could you describe the tonal difference between the two? How dramatic is the difference?

I haven't played both, but when I was having my SJ built Sheldon advised me on the pickup options. He told me he actually prefers the JJ set up on the SJ. He told me he has always preferred the J bass sound over the P. For many years I have played P basses that had a J pickup added at the bridge, and that's the direction I went with my SJ. I've had a few Jazz basses through the years (wish I had them now to sell and fund more Dingwalls ) and I nearly always grabbed for my PJ basses instead because of the fuller lows. If the SuperP(ink) ever comes along and it has a J pickup at the bridge, well, I'll have a hard time resisting :) I think the answer to your question is that you have to decide what you prefer in a Fender-type bass and then let that be your guide.
