Congrats on the new mill, that should help production. I presume when you say"this will be a vacuum plenum for a new machine we're building" that you are referring to the milled piece in the pic?

Yes, the vacuum plenum is the waffle iron type thing cut from the disc. It will be bolted to a thickness planer that we've been hacking for the past few years.

So Jealous. I've had a "fuh-doll" on my x-mas list for years and it will probably be on that list for many more years to come.

I'll post some photos or a video when it's done. We basically cut apart a thickness planer, removed some parts, cut apart an XY milling table bolted half of that to the thickness planer, had a friend custom design the electronics to drive a DC gear motor that we mounted to the table. The vacuum chuck mounts to that and feeds headstocks in the the back of the planer (the opposite of what it was designed for) stops and feeds them back out.

Thanks Sheldon... guess I'd better wait for the pics, to fully "get it" and don't worry, it's my fault entirely for being completely lost at sea with that one hahaha... I guess you are talking about modding some kind of router machine on to a bench of some sort, aye Cap'n? :D

Sheldon, may you always reach "10" when you count fingers at the end of the day! FYI - I bought a used Afterburner I in June and still cannot believe how lucky I am to play one of your basses. Mike

When are you doing your next tour? I'd love to see the other machines you use.

Sheldon said, "Is there anything cooler looking than freshly milled aluminum? I think not." Beg to differ, but I think so: freshly milled (and subsequently finished) wood of certain species, in the form of your superlative basses. Congratulations on a dream come true! Ahhh...you aren't thinking of bringing out any aluminum basses a la Veleno, Kramer, or Travis Bean, are you?

We've got the headstock mill together and are doing test cuts. It's working perfectly so far. The vacuum chuck is bolted to the moving table. A headstock gets bolted to an aluminum plate that fits to the chuck. The whole assembly is fed into the back end of the planer and out again. Another tour isn't due for a couple of months. I'll post when the next one is on.

I'm also curious as to what other uses the CNC will be put to. I doubt you got it just to mill the vacuum plenum!

Hi Dennis, We use the CNC for everything from machining circuitboards to making jigs, fixtures and molds to carving bodies and necks.

Thanks Sheldon. That is what I had surmised, but I'm glad of the confirmation!
