All... looking for advice and maybe some help here. My buddy died in a snowboarding accident this week. His 16-year-old son and I had been in the process of trying to find him an amp, which I want to continue. We're looking for a combo he can acquire in the $3-400 range. He plays 4-string (MM SUB). I have a connection who distributes Laney amps, and so I can get an exceptional deal on those. But I've never seen or heard a Laney bass amp, and am wondering if anybody has experience with them? Or... if somebody wants to be helpful to a kid in a really sad situation and can help us get something real good for that type of money, I'd be interested in hearing from you. Thanks, adam

Any other reqirements other than price? Like size or power? I've played combos from a PJB Briefcase to a Nemesis 410...a 20 watt 110 to an 800 watt 112. My best friend in high school had a Laney 110 combo that I played in our first garage band. It made the right noises but I wasn't a huge fan. I'm sure they've gotten better since then.

Medium size and power. He's liked the 1X15 amps he's tried, which conflicts with my taste (smaller speakers... I play PJB). The Laney that interested me was the 1X12, which I think is 160W. If I could steer him toward a good 2X10 in his price range (like a Nemesis, which I think costs too much, but maybe not...), I might try.

I have one of these and I love it. 120W, 15in speaker, tilt-back design. http://cgi.ebay.com/CARVIN-BR15C-Bass-A ... 23056eff66 Mark

Adam, what area are you in? My boss has a Carvin BRX 112 neo combo (B800 head in a 112 cab) that he wants to sell and I don't think he cares about making money off the sale as long as he gets something reasonable. It's remarkably light and has more than enough headroom for a second cab if/when he wants to expand.

Thanks to both of you, Mark and Davio. I like the idea of the power of the B800... seems like it could easily handle another speaker, as you're saying. I'm in Rochester, NY... not down the street, exactly, but if the price were right, it might be worth the trip. You want to tell your boss Matthias's sad story and see how much he wants?

Hey Adam, I think it's great that you're taking this on, my dad passed away when I was 10 and it wasn't easy for me. I have one of these I'm not likely to be using anytime soon: http://www.ampeg.com/pdf/AP3550.pdf If you could come up with some sort of preamp, rack and a cab it's yours. Perhaps some folks out there have some odds n' ends they can do without?I'd have to ask you to cover shipping(it's pretty heavy)as times are tough right now, but keep it in mind if you're interested. Good luck! LPB

I knew this was the right place to come with this. You guys are all awesome. Anybody want to suggest a preamp or a cab to complete this potluck? If we can get one more nice piece of the puzzle donated, he'll have enough budget to buy that final piece and he'll have something pretty stellar. Here's the story about Matthias's dad: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/art ... l-Mountain Great guy, four kids... really awful.

Adam, I'm so sorry this happened. I will also try to help find some excellent free donated gear. Let me know what is needed. We have great resources here in New Orleans especially for the musicians after hurricane Katrina! We have been trying to get instruments to Haiti and had a HUGE response. I lost all of my bass gear and Tipatinas came through to help me and many other musicians. Let me know what is needed to complete the rig. -Dave "Symphony Boy" Anderson _______________________________________ http://www.myspace.com/symphonyboy http://contrabassconversations.com/gues ... -anderson/ http://www.jambase.com/Artists/49339/An ... ey-Project http://bestofneworleans.com/gyrobase/Lo ... id%3A45986 Dave "Symphony Boy" Anderson http://www.lpomusic.com/index.php?q=Orc ... idAnderson Principal Bass, Louisiana Philharmonic (LPO) New Orleans

Dave, I'm overwhelmed by your and others' responses. Thanks so much. Let's see how this plays out, and then I'll talk to you about what we haven't been able to find. Incidentally, Matthias is an upright player as well. A little symphonic music, a little death metal. He's a good kid.

I just left him a voicemail telling him what's going on and asking what he wants for it so I'll get back to you. Not to disuade you from the potluck option, but that Ampeg power amp alone is almost as heavy as the Carvin combo with a fraction of the wattage. Shipping on the free items might come out to be worse than buying something locally. If it [i:9uh64a0b]does[/i:9uh64a0b] turn out to be the better option, I think it's a pretty awesome thing to bring the community together like that.

Davio, I think you're probably making sense. And not just because of weight, but also complexity... I think simple is better for Matthias right now. So, yes, let me know what your boss wants for the Carvin. And Dave... maybe what we'd be looking for then is an extension cab to go with the Carvin? Maybe another 12? But maybe not. I'd like to see how loud the Carvin is by itself... sometimes a single 12 can really kick.
