Excellent interview Michael! Sheldon this is the best most informative video I've seen on how you approach your designs IMHO. Very cool way of explaining it. I had an epiphany early in the interview. You're a guitar player and that's why you like the lighter gauge strings. As a bassist/drummer who plays guitar live occasionally I need phat strings on a guitar. Because of the extra muscle it usually takes to play bass I found myself pushing down too hard on a 10 gauge set and intonation would drive me crazy. I need 12's on my electric with a wound 3rd and 13's on my shallow acoustic for contrast. Years ago, circa 2005 I was sitting with my 1st ABII5 asking myself why can't I get my sound out of the most perfect bass I'd played to date. I put a Carvin/LaBella .85T A string on and bam that's my sound. Of course the B and E string wouldn't clear the nut, but I had to find out what a whole set sounded like. I thought am I the only one who needs phatter strings to get the sound I have in my head. I had to find out. I'm as happy as a player can be with my bass right now. The MII also helped my tonal goals. Sheldon I want to thank you for allowing me to use the Dingwall forum as basically the main point to get the word out on my strings. As one of the top 5 luthiers IMHO your basses deserve string options. Testing strings can be a pia. Thank God you use quick release bridges.
