Hey guys, I recently got a 6 string AB I that had DR longnecks on it. Like Sheldon has said, they don't work. Out of desperation, I installed a set of GHS Boomers M3045X Long scale Plus (45 65 85 105) and luckily I had a matching Boomer 136 B (DYB136) that I'd ordered a while back from juststrings. I had a used C string laying around, a 28 IIRC that I threw on too.
SOUND: Well, I really like the tone of this set. The guys in the band can't tell the difference between the sound of my 6 compared to my AB 5 w/ DW stainless strings. I can hear the difference, nickels plated steel Bommers are a little less bright.
FEEL: easier on the finger tips and frets than stainless. The tension is higher, strings are tighter. I kinda like this, I have less fret buzz. I'm learning to play with a lighter touch. But, for now, heavier strings help my sound.
***I've also been able to tune down to AEADGC and ADADGC with this set, with no problems.*** I don't routinely use altered tunings, but it's good to know.
ALSO: DW sets are 30 45 55 75 95 128 . If you get the Long Scale Plus LIGHT set (L3045X) 40 55 75 95 the E, A, and D are the same as DW. This would help remedy the tension difference.
Hope you nickel string lovers found this helpful.
