New to the Dingwall family, still getting up to speed on all the variations. What pickups are in this bass, what is the control configuration, and how old is it? Also, any idea why the AB1's are so much heavier than the ABZ- thicker body, or ???

This accounts for most if not all of the weight difference. The pickups are likely FD3s.

Other than sporting a new neck, there are no mods that I can see (I'm the second owner). The control layout is volume, 4 position selector, tone, and blue Q (?) switch. Still has the original strings which sound brand new. Regarding the ABZ: somewhat lighter, slightly narrower string spacing, fingerboard edges have a more pronounced "roll". The body finish is not quite as durable but it's right up there with the AB-I in most regards.
