Just wondering what tonal differences exist betweenst the two. I'm considering purchasing a used ABI sporting [u:dztbn5up]FD-1[/u:dztbn5up] pickups lifted from a Z2. The FD-3's were too bright according to the original owner. I'm planning on using the conventional passive 4-way harness. Thanks! Riis

The FD-1's sound brighter and more hifi to me because they have a peak at about 1.2K. The FD-3s are a little more full-range and traditional sounding. There are some guys that still prefer the FD-1 tone so if you don't you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a buyer for them.

As I understand it the FD-3 has four wires and two coils. Are these coils laid out like two Jazz pickups side-by-side? Or are they laid out like precision pickups, i.e. one coil under two strings and the other coil under three strings?

FD-3s are laid out as P pickups. Not sure if reverse P or standard, though

Two coils, reverse P config.
