Just curious what the preferred technique of choice is.

I can concur with most of has been said. I love adding fingernail occasionally, find it more natural sounding than a pick, and more variable with position. I am always paranoid about my fingernails - whenever they chip from projects around the house, I freak! I keep clippers and nail files all around for such emergencies! My techniques include, in order of usage: - Two-finger with occasional fingernail for effect, especially on low strings. - Thumb plus two or three fingers like a classical guitarist, great for chording, often with some fingernail - Pick - Hybrid picking using pick on low strings and remaining fingers for higher notes - Thumb only for dub-like sounds - Slap/pop - not my specialty, but getting there. - Right hand hammer-ons and pinch harmonics - still working on these!

Mostly with fingers. Even more if I play a lot and my callouses get hard. It sounds as crisp as a pick (almost). Sometimes I will play with a pick in songs that sound sloppy, to tighten them up. I am a better player with a pick, but have leaned toward the fingers. (I love watching John Myung's hands) He plays with all 4 fingers on both hands. Amazing! Some songs like "Love, Hate, Love" by AIC, I use both and hold the pick, but pluck with the fingers too. (I use my Spector bass for that band).

Same for me as what everyone else has said so far: mostly fingers, occasionally thumb and thumb nail and, when using a pick (rarely), I use a thumb pick. I like the sound and feel of it better than a standard flat pick, can't drop the darn thing and can have my fingers at the ready for using both techniques in one song if desired. John

Mostly fingers (95-99%). I will used a pick only if I cannot get away by using my fingers ("Eye of the tiger" and ""I was made for loving you" are the only two songs that pop immediatelly to my mind in neeed of a pick)

What Frank said. The AB sounds pretty huge when picked, especially with fresh Dingwall strings :) Mark

Mostly fingers, except where the song requires that pick sound.
