I am looking to convert my Combustion 5 string (which is, ironically was upgraded to NG2 specs with the Darkglass Tone capsule) to a fully passive bass.

Few quick questions:

1. Would it be possible to swap pickups to lower output actives, or passives and remove the preamp section?

2. If it is possible to swap pickups, am I limited to Dingwall specific pickups or are there 3rd party pickups out there for Dingwalls? I understand the routing is different then a traditional bass, and obviously, these pickups would have to be multiscale, but Ive seen a few multi scale passive pickups out in the wild. Not sure if it could be a 1 to 1 replacement or if routing is necessary.

I love my Dingwall, but it is waaaaaay too high output, and I am not enjoying active pickups on any of my basses. If I had a large budget, I would just get a Super P or J 5, and call it, but I love my Combustion and just want to customize it to my liking.

I appreciate any suggestions!

Dingwall Pickups are Passive. If the Output is too high, use a pad in the amp input or lower input gain.

You should be able to remove or bypass the onboard preamp and make the bass passive, but you need to know how to do that. I don’t think after market pickups are available for Dingwall Basses

Depending on your definition of aftermarket there might be. Nordstrand Audio, who makes "Dingwall pickups" for non-fanned basses, also makes custom housing (what they call Raw pickups) for many of their pickup models and I have seen people putting custom Nordstrand pickups on Dingwalls.
