sorry if this has already been discussed, but has anyone tried the Circle K strings that apparently fit ABII's now? https://circlekstrings.com/store/medium.5string.html

I've been wondering about them lately too. I'll email Skip and post any findings.

Thanks for checking. I've been holding off to see if the 5 string Hellborg set comes out soon, but these would be my next choice...

Doh! I feel rather stupid. While waiting for Skip to get back to me I did some searching around and apparently Circle K strings have been available for a while and there are a handful of reviews if you search TB. I'd be interested to hear what they're like on a Dingwall, though. Anybody up for it? http://www.circlekstrings.com I might be ordering a 5 set to try on my jazz soon. EDIT: To keep from misrepresenting myself as a total nincompoop here, I heard about Circle K strings some years back when Skip was first testing things out but I hadn't really heard anything since then. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to the thread.

Here's the reply I got this morning from Skip: Hey We've been selling Dingwall sets since June. There are more gauges coming but there's some choice at present. Any Traditional set is balanced for the .75" scale length shift, and the mediums are the right length. I've had some players use them, but not a bunch - more feedback is good. If some of you brave souls are willing, I'd love to hear what you think. Skip

Just got some for my Combustion and they sound good, I'm not impress with the G string sounds a little too thin. overall they have a good feel and a piano tone to them. I'm using the 37" 130 balance set.

FWIW, I checked with DR about the Hellborg five string set and they said it was no-go. They couldn't get the single wrap thing to work for the B string. Still, the Hellborgs are very cool strings for a Super J 4. They sound great in the mix, kind of like the punch of TI Jazz flats, but with a bit more zing, and a decent slap sound.

Just got a new 5 string set of the Circle K traditional medium 130s for my ABII. I have not had a chance to play them with the band yet, or even hear them through my rig, but I love the way they feel, and they sound great through the headphones. They are just as described on the web site. They are not as sqeaky and zingy as the steels, but they are also not as scooped sounding as nickels. They are way long enough, and the tension feels perfect to me. Perhaps a bit less tension then the steels. I'll post and update when I've had a chance to rehearse them.

Am contemplating a Trad. Standard set for my SJ5, (the Balanced sets are wrong for fanned fret basses), thing is I'd need to get a new nut to fit the .142 B Skip suggests! The other gauges are .106 .80 .61 .46 - the .142 is to cope better with being dropped to A...

Hey Jon, Sorry but I forgot to report back on this! I love these strings. They have a real nice stainless type sound, but they are not as zingy. They are I would say a bit darker or warmer than stainless, but they don't sacrifice that nice clear tone. I will be buying more of these in the future.

Just got back from a rehearsal using a Prima Artist tuned F#-D with a 0.175 F# Circle K set Very nice tone. Not as bright as Dignwall strings, but still quite articulate and balanced

Have you tried their balanced sets on your parallel fret basses? I'd give them a try but I don't own a parallel fret bass :D

Do you own any of your basses, and if so, what do you have?

I'm a wannabe bass player. I'm mostly a guitar player and drummer so don't own any basses other than the ones in production. Oddly I play bass every day and rarely have time to play guitar and never time for drums. I have one pre-fire guitar that was fortunately out of the shop on consignment. I keep a lot of the prototypes. My goal is to one day own a Kubicki and maybe a Spalt.
