EA gear all the way! I use a iAmp 800 with a nl 210 and a cxl 112 if needed. That would be all you need. If you are playing in a big arena you play through the PA with the on board DI. If it's good enough for Leland Sklar it's good enough for me. Maybe a little pricey but well worth it. Check them out at www.euphonicaudio.com. By the way Dingwall Sales Lamb reps them in Canada.

EA +1000 It has a great sound from 1 to 10. No gig you cannot play with it. Light as well

Hi Fullie, Great to hear you are an EA guy. Do you have any reports on your Z3 yet? I'm anxious to her what you have to say on how it compares to PA. I have one on order to go with my PA. Although my PA has the upgrade to the new mach II's in both neck and bridge positions. I really like the flexibility of just flipping a switch to get different tones and volumes. Can't wait to get my Z3. I'm hoping to visit Dingwall Land in late June? David

In short, the PA, the Z1 and Z2 are completely different animals compared with the Z3 (different, not inferior or superior). If one has a PA I suggest that he/she gets a Z3 as well to have all bas(s)es covered The full review will be done before the weekend and posted on Tuesday (Monday night I'm hitting the studio with 4 Dingwalls: PA, Z1, Z2and Z3 )

nastyn8c, I understand your point but I am just an overrated imaginary character living in Dingwall-land Apart from the EA iAmp 800, I own an EBS Gorm (15"& tweeter), a Markbass CMD 102P and a Laney (can't remember what model that is). The EBS IMO has a nice character (I would not call it transparent, but it's not coloring the sound in a heavy or ugly way); it's not very mid versatile but nonetheless a great bass to gig esp with a Pop, Rock, Jazz group. The Markbass (again IMO) is louder and much more versatile in the mids (cuts very easily without getting loud) but it lacks the big push in the lows (that the EBS has). I often gig with it esp if there is a PA present to take care of the low end, while I use it as a monitor. When it comes to amps, I am not as proficient as Tom Bowlus , so I use what i have

I've been playing through a GBE600 into a Schroeder 210212L cab. I just purchased a 1212L to stack with the bigger cab. I plan on upgrading the GBE600 to either a 750 or 1200 in the near future. I find that with three guitarists and a fairly loud drummer (hey, he has to be!), I am sort of at the onset of where the circuit limiter starts to engage. Of course, the nice thing about the Genz circuit limiter is that it is a very gradual limit that is very musical. Anyway, I love my rig with my Dingwalls, especially for rock.

I haven't played a Dingwall through my set-up yet (though I should have a Dingwall in the not too distant future as I have one on order), but I have been very pleased with the Genz-Benz 750 and Neo 212's. I have two cabs but only occasionally play a gig big enough to use them both. Definitely worth giving a try...

Glockenklang Heart Rock. Love the amp, only thing I don't dig much is the eq points.

Markbass does it for me, I love the clarity, the power and the very low weight, my 500W amp weighs 8lbs 6oz, my front port 4x10 weighs 65lbs and my rear port 4x10 56lbs. I take Fullies point that the 102p does lack a bit of low end clout but I can assure you a 104HF more than covers that region, its freq response goes down to 33hz and my TA503 is loud and transparent with amazingingly musical eq to deal with those awkward rooms. I get a real kick out of playing my AB1 through this rig, it seems like a perfect match IMHO. I also like the portability, for small rooms I can use just the TA503 and 104 HR which is a breeze to move around and can really hold its own against a loud kit and a big brass section. I have never had to use this amp with the main volume set any higher than 9, oclock (and it doesn't start until around 6:30!) As others have mentioned, I find that the EA iAmp 800 works great. Like you, I also have a Phil Jones briefcase amp that works fine for small jazz gigs. (and freaks out the PA guys because of its small size). In the old days I used a Crown DC300A and an Audio Arts ducted port cabinet (no longer made) with a six string bass (Alembic pickups) A pain in the ass to cart around but what a sound. Good luck...

The PJB 6-Pack is pretty amazing. For size it's crazy loud and sounds great. One tip is to get them to make the amp overload setting less sensitive so you can push it a little harder. I've got both suitcase and 6-pack and for most gigs the 6-pack is more than loud enough. Like all PJB's it somehow is larger than life...

Hey TwoPort, what is your opinion about the low B string reproduction by the six pack. I have noticed on the frequency response curve that there is significant drop off below the 40 hz rating. With the B string resonating at about 30 Hz, I would think the six pack would be somewhat dissapointing in the range of the B string. What is your, and anyone elses opinion on this?

This is an interesting question. Actually if you look at PA speakers only the high end one's do much heavy lifting below 40hz. I've been messing with this for about 10 years now and my opinion is that it really depends on the kind of music you're playing.... To give some perspective - to get my low B (and of course de-tuned Low A!) I was using a Bag End Quartz (4-18") with a QSC PL4 (4000 watts) for the low end and then various other cabs for the rest.... 1. If you're really pushing alot of low fundamental - really down to 30. It conflicts with the kick drum unless the kick has a high pass. I experienced alot of low end chaos thuds where the kick and the bass were both crowding those low frequencies. 2. I also found that the infra lows were perhaps a little annoying all night. So I started trying to listen to music specifically to see the relationship between the kick and bass to see what was "super stout infra low end..." Much of it was band oriented and some of it was also more generally genra oriented. 3. I'm playing alot of R&B and funk. Much of that involves quick bass lines and the super low's tend to make the bass sound flabby by making weird SPL waves in the infra range. So I got rid of the Bag end's... In our PA mix (Meyers subs!!) We roll off the bass at 100 to get RID of the low end and then pump up the kick so it's super phat. The combination is perfect although if you listened to the bass by itself it would seem a little thin. When we kept the bass and kick both phat it doesn't sound right. 4. For some rock we do the opposite! We open up he bass full range on the lows and roll off the lows on the kick. Again, if you listen to the kick by itself it sounds a little weird but in combination with the bass it's clean and sounds "right".. So.......... It's sort of a combination of what your PA is producing vs. what you need on stage. If you got "not so much PA low end horsepower" then you need more horsepower on stage and with a loud band for 200 people the 6 pack won't work because it's a stage monitor. You'll need much more if it's you filling the room. Finally - to answer your question (sorry)... The low B is very stout with the PJB and it is very tight. You will easily hear the note and it will do a good job of getting into the room. But you will not feel that low end phat fundamental like you guessed. On the other hand, I find that many of the "next step up" in size cabinets don't really produce much in the 30 range either. And bass players wind up sounding very boomy in the room in the 70-120 range trying to really hear 30!

Great response - I had not considerred analyzing the bass AS A PART of the overall mix. I fall into the trap of listening to a bass rig in a store showroom, plucking out some line and judging that way. Obviously that is the wrong approach when thinking about the sound of the BAND. I happen to be the sound engineer and own the PA for my group, so apparently I have complete control over this question!! Thanks again.
