I put one of these in my ABI today, searching to squeeze a different tone from the bass. It seems to work as they explain, but I've only played it quietly through a small amp, so far. Anybody used one? http://www.stellartone.com/index.asp Mark

[quote="Jjango":2onj7mde]Does anyone know how this is different than a traditional "varitone" switch? :?:[/quote:2onj7mde] Here's part of an email I received from Don at Stellartone: [i:2onj7mde]Hi, Mark - Thanks for your eMail. Yes, the ToneStyler BASS control works in the exact way you have anticipated. While selectively rolling off the highs, the pickup's maximum resonance is progressively shifted lower, which acts as a "passive" mid boost. In strong contrast, regular tone pots offer zero change in pickup resonance through their adjustment range, because they have only one capacitor, not fifteen. Traditionally bright pickups that are light in mids (such as Tele pickups) become much fatter. Your Dingwall pickups should react the exact same way.[/i:2onj7mde] Mark

I've been trying to weigh my options for a new frankenbass project and I don't really want to use an active preamp...I think this might be the ticket! Thanks for the review!

I did another gig last night and used my ABI. I'm sold on the Stellartone Tonestyler enough that I've put off getting new pickups. I hope some of the other forum members will try this mod. Mark

Very intriguing. Thanks for making us aware of this, brother! I may try one at some point, but outlays for PA gear have my bank account a bit depleted at the moment... Ken

Well, I have to give them credit at http://www.stellartone.com/index.asp It seems like this product has changed the tonal character of my ABI. It really retains the mids and makes the overall sound more wooly and thick. They say it lowers the pups resonance and doesn't load them as much as a conventional tone pot. I get the loading part, but I'm still not sure I understand the resonance part. Anyway, I was looking at putting Villex pups in, but I think this Tonestyler may satisfy me for now, and it will free up funds to buy 2 or 3 more and put them in some other passive basses like my Rick and P bass. I would like to see somebody else on the forum try this tone pot in their ABI and give their impressions. Mark

I'm taking my AB with the $100 tone control (and my new-to-me Rickenbacker Cheyenne I :D ) to the gig tomorrow night, so I'll try to post my impressions shortly thereafter. Mark
