My Z, like all Zs, has many different settings, not all of them useful, for playing live anyway. A Z is a million times more versatile than a jazz bass if you are looking for a lot of adjustability of tone. The great thing about a Z with FD pickups is the fullness of sound and the juicy overtones. A Z naturally wants to sound like the bass notes of a grand piano, but it will do whatever you call on it to do. I had a MachII pickup put at the bridge, and an FD3 at the neck. IIRC, Sheldon loves that particular set up. Go for the Z1.
